Swarmed for science
Working late into the tropical night, Jadranka Rota meticulously picks only select specimens of moths from among a massive swarm of insects attracted by a mercury vapor light collecting station at the La Selva Biological Station of the Organization for Tropical Studies.

La Selva offers a rich trove of insect life for researchers such as Rota, a University of Connecticut graduate student. The station boasts some 7,000 species of butterflies and moths, compared to 14,000 species in the entire North American continent north of Mexico.

"Postcards from Costa Rica" commemorates the organization's 40th anniversary. A full-length article on how its researchers and policymakers are helping to conserve tropical forests will appear in an upcoming issue of Duke Magazine.
