A swirling flock of black-bellied whistling ducks fills the dawn sky at the Palo Verde Research Station of the Organization for Tropical Studies.

The Palo Verde Park's 8,000 acres comprise a mosaic of dry deciduous forest, riparian forest, mangroves and floodplain marsh. The park offers an extraordinary resource for OTS research and education programs, including ecotourism. Besides a wealth of many of the region's 300 bird species, visitors can encounter howler and capuchin monkeys, deer, coatis, iguanas, and peccaries. "Postcards from Costa Rica" commemorates the organization's 40th anniversary. A full-length article on how its researchers and policymakers are helping to conserve tropical forests will appear in an upcoming issue of Duke Magazine.
