Graduate student Michael Brewer climbs into the treetop canopy of the La Selva Research Station in Costa Rica to collect samples from the roots of plants that derive moisture and nutrients from the air, such as bromeliads and ferns.

"Postcards from Costa Rica" commemorates the Organization for Tropical Studies 40th anniversary. A full-length article on how its researchers and policymakers are helping to conserve tropical forests will appear in an upcoming issue of Duke Magazine.
