Learn About the Biggest Weight Loss Mistakes

Presentation to discuss making sustainable dietary changes

Faculty and staff looking to find easily applicable tips for losing weight can join some myth busting next week.

From noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 18, Keri Linares, a clinical dietitian at the Duke Health and Fitness Center, will lead a presentation on the biggest weight loss mistakes dieters fall trap to and how to avoid them. The free lecture and discussion will take place in the private exercise studio at the Duke Health and Fitness Center at 3475 Erwin Road.

The program is part of the center’s monthly “lunch and learn” series. No registration is necessary.

Linares said that because the diet industry is a multi-billion dollar business, there’s an incentive to perpetuate “quick fixes” to drop weight, but many solutions are only temporary. The goal of the presentation is to highlight seven common aspects of fad diets and sharing tips that can lead to long-term changes in diet and wellness.

“When you make sustainable changes, you don’t ever have to change them again,” Linares said. “You don’t have to worry about what is ‘hot’ or trendy because those don’t work in the long run.”

After about 45 minutes of presenting to the audience, Linares will lead a group discussion. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch. Parking is free in lots around the Fitness Center.

Future “lunch and learn” sessions will focus on topics like exercising while aging and a body balance to avoid the risk of falls.
