Before the Weiseman family took their 7-month-old son to the beach, they first introduced him to the pool.Meghan Weiseman, facility coordinator for Brodie Recreation Center, and her son, Dylan, spent Saturday mornings last June and July at Central Campus Pool, singing songs and playing in the water. The outdoor pool facility on Yearby Avenue in Durham is open and offering leisure-swim activities and swim lessons over the summer. The pool is open to students, staff and faculty with a DukeCard ID and their family members. “If you don’t belong to a pool or don’t have access to a pool, this is a really great option,” Weiseman said. Duke Recreation and Physical Education maintains the pool, but patrons do not have to be a Duke Recreation member to use it. Individuals have to sign a waiver to use the facility, and an adult with a DukeCard ID must accompany children 14 years old and younger.Last year, nearly 2,700 Duke employees and about 2,400 students visited Central Campus Pool from May to September, according to Duke Recreation. Summer hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends, barring inclement weather. There is at least one lifeguard on duty during pool hours. Some of the aquatic programs, such as youth and adult swim lessons, require a fee. Duke students, employees and their families have access to two charcoal grills and picnic tables. The pool is located directly behind the Devil's Bistro, a restaurant that offers sandwiches, salads, burgers and refreshments.“Central Campus Pool is such a fun, relaxing place, and it’s really family-friendly,” said Deborah Milam, aquatics program coordinator with Duke Recreation and Physical Education. “During the peak of summer, we have quite a few families out there.”
