A roundup of new senior leaders coming aboard at beginning of the fiscal year

With the beginning of the new fiscal year on July 1, there will also be several additions to the Duke senior leadership team. Here’s a roundup of key appointments:
Provost: Alec Gallimore begins his term as chief academic officer on July 1. He will oversee the university’s academic mission, with broad responsibility for leading Duke’s schools and institutes, admissions, financial aid, libraries and information technology. He comes from the University of Michigan, where he was the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of the College of Engineering.
Executive Vice President for Health Affairs: Dr. Mary Klotmanwill add this title along with continuing to serve as dean of the School of Medicine. In this new position, Klotman will oversee the academic mission of the Duke University Health System, working closely with health system CEO Dr. Craig Albanese to align Duke’s academic and clinical missions in medicine. In her new role as chief academic officer of Duke Health, Klotman will report to President Vincent Price. As dean of the School of Medicine, she will report to Gallimore.
Vice President for Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs: Frank Tramble becomes the university’s chief communications strategist, responsible for leading communications and marketing programs to advance Duke’s strategic priorities and promote its reputation. Tramble had been vice president of communications and chief communications officer at Howard University.
Vice President for Government Relations: Chris Simmons has been promoted to a new vice president role with responsibility for all aspects of government relations at the state, federal and international levels. Simmons will work closely with Vice President of Durham and Community Affairs Stelfanie Williams on local policy issues and coordinate with the Duke Health Office of Government Relations on health care policy. He will report to President Price.
Associate Vice President/Associate Vice Provost for Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning: Current Sanford School faculty member Abdullah Antepliwill take on this new role advancing community-engaged scholarship and civic engagement on campus. A central aspect of the position will be to coordinate these academic activities with the university’s numerous community engagement initiatives. Antepli came to Duke in 2008 to serve as the university’s first Muslim chaplain.
Vice President and Vice Provost for Climate and Sustainability: Toddi Steelman moves from her role as Stanback Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment to a new role where she will oversee the Duke Climate Commitment and lead the Office of Climate and Sustainability. She will report jointly to the provost and executive vice president and will serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet. Steelman will work with Duke students and colleagues, as well as with external partners, in the university’s efforts to create sustainable and equitable solutions to the climate crisis.
Stanback Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment: Lori Bennear, professor of energy economics and policy, will serve a two-year term succeeding Steelman at the Nicholas School. Bennear has served as executive vice dean of the Nicholas School since 2022 and has been at Duke since 2004.
