As part of the two-day Duke Climate Commitment announcement, events on Friday, Sept. 30 focused on student-led discussions.

The day began with live recordings of two student climate podcasts “Energy Terminal” and “Operation Climate.” Student hosts interviewed Duke alums working on climate issues – Claire Wang ’19, international climate policy expert, and Haroon Inam ’84 and ’86, chief technology officer of SmartWires.

Duke graduate student Gabriela Nagle Alverio, a JD/PhD candidate, also moderated a panel discussion focused on the climate justice movement. The speakers included William Barber III, director of climate and environmental justice for The Climate Reality Project and founder of the Rural Beacon Initiative, Jennifer Hadden, associate professor in the department of government and politics at the University of Maryland and Yumna Kamel, co-founder of Earth Refuge.

The two-day event series began on Sept. 29 with special remarks from Duke University President Vincent Price on Duke’s climate vision, and Duke alumni, students, faculty, staff and guests spoke of the university’s goals to facilitate a clean energy transition, create more climate-resilient communities, leverage strengths in data to address climate problems, infuse climate fluency into the student curriculum, and focus on environmental and climate justice.

The Duke Climate Commitment unites the university’s education, research, operations and public service missions to engage the entire community in the pursuit of climate change solutions. Learn more about the Duke Climate Commitment and find out how to get involved at climate.duke.edu.
