Duke’s Occupational & Environmental Safety Office and Workers’ Compensation Office want to see your best on-campus or work-from-home safety selfie for National Safety Month in June.
National Safety Month, established by the National Safety Council, is a nationwide campaign that focuses on increasing awareness of safety in the workplace.
As part of the annual campaign, Duke University and Duke University Health System staff and faculty are invited to share photographs that illustrate how they and/or their team eliminate risks to prevent work injuries and how they practice on-the-job safety, whether working from home or on campus.
Photos must be taken at work between June 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021, and submitted by July 2, 2021. One employee with the winning picture will receive a “Proud to be Working@Duke” T-shirt. The team with the winning photo will receive up to three “Proud to be Working@Duke” T-shirts.
The goal of the challenge is to help identify risks to prevent injuries in the work environment.
“We want employees to end their work shift as safe and healthy as when it began,” said Nicole Greeson, director of occupational hygiene and safety for Duke's Occupational & Environmental Safety Office. “Particularly given the number of people working remotely, we want everyone to think about how important safety is in every work setting.”
As examples of pictures to submit for the challenge, participants can send photos of themselves removing cords on the floor that could cause someone to trip, washing hands or using hand sanitizer, identifying the nearest fire extinguisher and working from a secure and sturdy work surface.
Chip Kyles, director of Workers’ Compensation, said the most common types of injuries at Duke come from falls, cuts and lifting objects. His office receives about 3,000 injury reports each year.
“Duke has an incredibly diverse array of jobs, and every job entails some degree of risk,” Kyles said. “It’s the people within each work group who can identify the risks and implement best safety practices.”
For example, Duke Dining’s team in the Marketplace on East Campus has a safety committee of six people who help determine what safety measures need to be in place and ensure employees are following them.
The safety committee installed a box in Marketplace where employees could submit ways to improve safety and put caution tape on sections of the floor that people commonly trip over.
Tammy Hope, senior operations manager and head of Marketplace’s safety committee, said accidents in the dining hall have decreased since the committee formed in August of 2019.
“The committee is focused on explaining why we have safety precautions in place,” Hope said. “People are more likely to comply once they understand why expectations are in place to prevent workplace injuries.”
