Forbes Recognizes Duke as a 'Best Employer' in 2019

Duke University and Duke Health System have earned spots on “America’s Best Employers 2019” list by Forbes, which released the list Wednesday.

Duke University ranked 30th and Duke University Health System was 170th for employers with 5,000 employees or more. Duke University's ranking was the highest of any large employer in North Carolina.

“External recognition helps to validate what we believe about our Duke colleagues and our work environment,” said Duke Vice President for Administration Kyle Cavanaugh. “Although Duke is constantly exploring opportunities to improve, we have some of the most talented individuals on the planet working in one of the best environments possible.”

Working with online statistics partner Statista, Forbes’ list is based on survey results from 50,000 anonymous respondents who work for companies from a range of industries that employ 1,000-or-more people in the U.S. The employees were asked 35 open-ended questions about work-related topics such as working conditions, salary, potential for development and company image regarding their current employer. They were also asked how willing they would be to recommend their employers to friends and family. Participants were also prompted to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stood out either positively or negatively.

Additional details about results related to Duke were not provided by Statista.

Duke has been routinely recognized by a variety of publications as a “Best Employer,” earning acclaim from organizations such as AARP, the Chronicle of Higher Education, NC Nurses Associates, DiversityInc and Carolina Parent.

In January, Duke University ranked 43rd on Forbes’ 2019 list of “Best Employers for Diversity.” Last year, Duke University was ranked 159th in its list of “Best Employers for Women.”
