Duke has purchased the 300 Swift Avenue apartment building, a 202-unit residential building that opened in 2014. The apartment complex, adjacent to Duke’s Central Campus, will provide options for university use as plans for renovations and additions to Duke’s current housing facilities proceed.

“It is difficult to time projects that take student facilities off-line for renovations.  Given the nature of the life at a university, there is simply no good time for projects that take longer than a summer to complete.  Purchasing 300 Swift allows us to provide more students with a stronger residential experience while Crowell is closed.  It also creates the potential for us to accelerate the retirement of Central down the road,” said Joe Gonzalez, Dean for Residential Life.

300 Swift offers apartment-style living with a variety of amenities such as washer/dryer and kitchen in each apartment. Units come in studio, 1- and 2-bedroom layouts. Other 300 Swift amenities include a fitness center, swimming pool and parking garage.

“The apartment style living, the in-unit amenities, the social spaces and a number of other features will, I am confident, make students more than happy with this campus living option.”

The current plan is for Crowell residents and houses to move to 300 Swift for the 217-2018 academic year, and return to a newly renovated Crowell in Fall of 2018.  The Residence Coordinator will move with the students of the following houses (all Crowell residents):

            •           Magnolia Commons (Crowell BB)

            •           Hart House (Crowell CC)

            •           Griffin House (Crowell G)

            •           Gates House (Crowell H)

            •           SLG Houses:

            •           Wayne Manor (Crowell DD)

            •           Cooper House (Crowell EE)

The standard room assignment and billing processes will apply, as will per-student costs.

Please see this FAQ for more information.

Please do not go over to 300 Swift to "look around" at this time. The complex is fully occupied and we do not wish to disrupt current residents in any fashion.  We will arrange a time for interested students to go visit at the appropriate time.
