Additional Safety Measures for Central Campus

Officers and patrols added due to two recent violent crimes

Dear Students,

Duke Police has asked me to share the following message:

In the last few weeks, we have had two violent crimes reported on or near Central Campus. Your safety is our most important priority, and we write tonight to let you know of additional measures being implemented immediately to increase security on campus.

Both of these recent incidents are under active investigation, and a photo of the suspect in the sexual assault on Nov. 30 has now been shared by Durham Police. If you have any information that might assist in the investigation of either incident, please contact Duke Police at 919-684-2444 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.

First, Duke Police will increase patrols and provide additional security presence on Central Campus, including Duke and Durham police officers and security personnel. Some officers will be in uniform and others will be in plain clothes. Security officers will be stationed at key locations to monitor activities and serve as an additional resource for students.

Second, Duke Vans will be staged on Central Campus to provide faster and more frequent response to requests for rides. Duke Van Services provide free rides daily during certain hours to and from on-campus locations where bus service is not available. Van service is available 24 hours daily. Request a ride by calling 919-684-2020.

You may also call Duke Police (919-684-2444) at any time for a walking escort. And we strongly encourage you to download and use the free LiveSafe Mobile app, which allows you the ability to make one-touch emergency calls, submit tips with photos, video or audio directly to Duke Police, and virtually escort your friends to ensure they arrive safely at their destination.

Lastly, please help keep each other and our campus safe by walking with a friend, avoid walking alone at night or in remote areas, be observant of your surroundings, and contact Duke Police if you see anything that makes you suspicious. Thank you, and be safe.
