Take a Tour of Sustainable Sights
Map points out a dozen ‘green’ highlights across Duke
Check out the West Campus Steam Plant, where Duke discontinued its use of coal. Visit the Bryan Center to see 45 solar thermal panels on the roof, or walk through Chapel Woods on your way to Environment Hall.
These are among highlights listed on an official sustainability walking tour map. Available through Sustainable Duke, Duke community members can download a copy of the map here, while offices and departments can request physical copies by contacting Sustainable Duke.
The map features a dozen stops across East, Central and West campuses – from the Duke Smart Home to Environment Hall – complete with facts about each. Some LEED certified buildings such as the Duke Cancer Center are also noted on the map.
Whether for employees, students or visitors, the map offers a quick look at some of the locations that make Duke’s efforts special. For over a year, the maps have been a hit with prospective students and their families, who pick them up at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
“People have loved taking them and love learning more about our commitment to being green at Duke,” said Adam Tomasiello, a senior admissions officer. “Our tours don’t have an entire stop dedicated to sustainability, but admissions officers talk about it during our information sessions and it’s a recurring question we get from visitors.”
