Duke Recreation and Physical Education, which manages Central Campus Pool, has updated its access policy to align Duke recreational facilities to require membership for use.

When the outdoor pool opens April 1, the facility will only be available to Duke community members who have a Duke Recreation membership or Central Campus Pool membership. Previously, memberships were not required to use the pool.

“Required memberships assist Duke Recreation in providing maintenance to all of our facilities,” said Abi Rutledge, aquatics director for Duke Recreation and Physical Education. “These memberships will also help us continue to provide upgrades to Central Campus Pool.”

Central Campus Pool individual memberships are $24 per month or $120 for the summer season, which runs through Aug. 31. A family membership is $240 and grants access to the Duke employee, spouse and two children. The price for adding additional children is a flat $60 fee.

Pool memberships can be purchased by using a debit card, cash or FLEX at the DukeCard Office, 012 Telecom Building. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The facility on Duke’s Central Campus offers a six-lane lap pool and leisure swim area, patio seating, tables and lounge chairs, and two charcoal grills. The pool is also adjacent to Dame’s Express, which serves chicken and waffles, sandwiches, salads, and burgers.

Pool hours are Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Extended summer hours start Memorial Day weekend when Duke Recreation staff kicks off summer with a Central Campus Pool party noon to 3 p.m. May 28 with music and free burgers, hot dogs and chips.

“Outdoor pools ring in summer,” Rutledge said. “Central Campus Pool will be a fun visit for faculty, staff and everybody who comes out to enjoy it.”

Pool visitors must show their DukeCard ID, and children under 16 years old will have to take a 25-yard swim test. Duke Recreation offers youth and adult swim lessons and Red Cross community lifeguard training during the summer. Check the Duke Recreation Aquatics webpage for updates to the class schedule.
