Free Gym Visits with Duke Recreation
Check out Duke Recreation and Physical Education’s fitness perks in 2016

Spice up a New Year’s fitness resolution by lifting weights, playing indoor basketball or running on the treadmill, all for free and without leaving the comforts of Duke campus.
Among a series of initiatives through the New Year, Duke Recreation and Physical Education is holding a “Recreation and Resolutions” program from Jan. 3 to Jan. 10, when Duke employees can visit Wilson Recreation Center on West Campus at no charge and try cardio and weightlifting equipment and more. Brodie Recreation Center on East Campus is closed through Jan. 10 for renovations to the weight room floor and painting.
Duke community members who visit Wilson for “Recreation and Resolutions” will need to show a valid DukeCard ID at the front desk and sign a waiver during the first visit.
“The New Year is a time many of us commit or recommit to lifestyle changes,” said Norma Whitley, Duke Recreation member services coordinator. “This is a good time to drop in, walk the indoor track, do cardio or weight training. This is how you get started, one step at a time.”
Here are other Duke Recreation membership promotions to watch out for in the New Year:
Make sure you’re heart healthy
February is American Heart Month, and to help raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, such as heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure, Duke Recreation is partnering with Duke Heart Center to provide perks and screenings.
During the month of February, employees don’t need a Duke Recreation membership to try out Wilson Recreation Center on West Campus and Brodie Recreation Center on East Campus. Duke community members just need to bring their DukeCard ID and sign a waiver to use the facilities for free for the month.
Duke Heart Center staff will also provide free heart health risk factor screenings such as blood pressure readings and answer questions at Wilson on Feb 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at Brodie on Feb. 8, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Work out with a colleague
Starting March 4 through April 29, Duke employees who are Duke Recreation members can bring along a coworker to try out Duke’s gyms at no charge on Fridays. Guests must show a valid DukeCard ID at the front desk and sign a waiver.
Get a free birthday pass
Duke employees receive seven free visits to Wilson and Brodie recreation centers during their birthday month in 2016. Staff and faculty can request a birthday pass by emailing memberships@duaa.duke.edu and then present their DukeCard ID and a valid form of identification, which includes their photo and date of birth, at the front desk of Wilson or Brodie.
