A hunger strike by a collection of Duke students Wednesday brought attention to the plight of the people of Kobani, Syria, who are under attack by fighters of the Islamic State. Pictured, graduate student Navid Naderi speaks with undergraduate student Gaby Benitez on the Chapel quad during a tenting in solidarity for the predominantly Kurdish town located on the border between Syria and Turkey.
Thousands of residents have sought refuge in Turkey, and the US-led coalition has attacked the Islamic State positions in the area. But many international observers state the town is at risk of falling to the Islamic State and have warned that remaining civilians are at risk, following evidence of Islamic State massacres in other Kurdish towns in the region.
