Whether they're looking for a new ride to work or a way to hit local trails, Duke community members will have a special opportunity to purchase a bike this week.

Duke will host a bike sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Arts Annex to sell-off a fleet of about 65 used bikes from the discontinued Duke Bikes program, which  allowed students to borrow university-owned bicycles rent-free.

All bikes will be discounted from their original purchase price by up to $600. Sale prices will be $100 or less and include Trek-brand mountain and street/trail hybrid bikes, as well as Globe-brand cargo-style bikes that can carry up to 110 pounds.

Purchases can be made with FLEX or cash only.

Nearly all bikes for sale are no more than three years old and all are in working condition. Some bicycles may need a tune-up by a mechanic to inflate tires or check brakes, said Watts Mangum II, operations manager for the Arts Annex. Purchases are for bikes as-is and sales are final. Refunds or exchanges are not available.

For those looking to tune-up or upgrade a current bike, Mangum said there will also be numerous spare parts available for purchase, from pedals to brakes or gears. Individual parts will cost $5.

For more information on the sale, contact Watts Mangum at (919) 684 4741.
