Beginning Feb. 4, Duke staff and faculty can join any branch of the Triangle YMCA under a discounted employee membership program.

LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke's employee wellness program, added the 11 branches of the Triangle YMCA to the Duke Fitness Club, a network of health and fitness facilities around the Triangle that offer discounted membership to Duke faculty, staff, retirees, spouses or same-sex partners, and dependents.

By signing up for YMCA branches in Durham, Raleigh, Cary and other areas in the Triangle, faculty and staff will receive waived enrollment fees and can pay monthly dues through payroll deduction.

Liz Grabosky, fitness manager for LIVE FOR LIFE, said the addition of the Triangle YMCA to the Duke Fitness Club came about because Duke wanted to cover previously under-served areas like Wake Forest and Apex, while expanding family options in cities like Durham and Raleigh.

"From a programming standpoint, the Y provides robust youth and senior programming that helps us round out what we offer employees through the Duke Fitness Club," Grabosky said.

Monthly membership rates vary at each YMCA location but range from about $41 for an individual to about $61 for an adult and dependents. By signing up through the Fitness Club, Duke employees have the joining fee waived - $100 for an individual and up to $250 for a family of four.

Currently, about 3,000 faculty and staff use the Duke Fitness Club to maintain discounted membership rates with 13 fitness center providers. The most popular option is membership with Duke's Brodie and Wilson recreation centers, where 991 current faculty and staff are charged $17.33 each month for a discounted individual membership.

Registration into the Duke Fitness Club can be completed online through LIVE FOR LIFE. Once completed, an application will be submitted directly to LIVE FOR LIFE customer service, and a representative contacts the enrollee to set up payments through payroll deduction. A full list of participating YMCA facilities is available online.

"Offering these discounts and payroll deduction make it easy and affordable for all faculty and staff to get started at a local gym and work toward their wellness goals," said Julie Joyner, manager for LIVE FOR LIFE. "It's another commitment Duke can make to promote health and fitness for its employees."
