Duke Announces Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship Awards

Named for first black student body president at Duke, who died in 1976

Duke University has awarded four incoming freshmen with the Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship, which covers full tuition, room, board and mandatory fees for eight semesters. The full value of each scholarship is more than $220,000 over four years. Duke provides scholarships annually to first-year students of African heritage who demonstrate outstanding leadership ability, scholastic achievement, community involvement and evidence of serious commitment to a life of service to others.

The Howard undergraduate scholarship is named for the first black student body president at Duke, who died in a car accident in 1976. This year's recipients are:

-- Marcayla Nicole Hester of Jefferson, Ga., a graduate of Jefferson High School, and daughter of Ericka and Marvin Johnson. -- Abraham Paul Ng'hwani of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, a graduate of the International School of Moshi in Moshi, Kilimanjaro, and son of Josephine and Paul Ng'hwani. -- Nyuol Lueth Tong of Los Olivos, Calif., a graduate of the Dunn School, and son of Aluel Manin and Lueth Matiok of South Sudan. -- Niara Elyssa Wright of Suwanee, Ga., a graduate of North Gwinnett High School, and daughter of Melanie and Sidney Wright.
