Roadwork to Impact Campus Drive, Other Streets

Several construction projects will begin in coming weeks

Starting Dec. 14, motorists will need to detour around a portion of Campus Drive as a Duke construction project resumes during winter break.

Through Jan. 5, Campus Drive will be closed from Maxwell Street to Swift Avenue, with no traffic allowed to pass through that area. Construction crews will install piping from West Campus to assist in the cooling of buildings on East Campus. In addition, new curbing and sidewalks are being added as well as new pavement, bike lanes and improved drainage.

The work is part of an effort that took place over the summer, but was delayed because of the season's above-normal rainfall. Other roadwork along Campus Drive will take place closer to Christmas.

Weather permitting, a one-block portion of Campus Drive, from Oregon Street to Swift Avenue, will be closed on Dec. 23 to apply a final top layer of asphalt paving.

In addition, the Swift Avenue-Campus Drive intersection will be closed from 9 a.m. Dec. 20 to 7 a.m. Dec. 23 to allow for paving.

However, if temperatures are not above 50 degrees with sunshine, work will be delayed until the summer, when the rest of Campus Drive is scheduled for the final paving work.

Additional roadwork is also scheduled in coming weeks:

Chapel Circle Improvement and RenovationOn Dec. 16, Facilities will begin the first phase of installing a new storm drainage system at the Chapel Drive roundabout on West Campus. The work is in preparation for a full renovation during summer 2014.

During winter break, one lane of traffic will remain open at all times with crews directing traffic in-and-out of the five roads entering the circle.

Between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, construction will take place overnight on two yet-to-be-determined nights, closing off two streets at a time that enter the Chapel Drive roundabout. Crews will be on-hand to direct traffic for emergency response vehicles only.

Wannamaker DriveAbout 15 parking spaces will be blocked off at the Wannamaker Drive Lot and traffic will be reduced to one lane from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5. Construction will take place to install two drain valves into the campus’ chilled water system.

Research Drive CrosswalkResearch Drive will be reduced to one lane from Dec. 4 to Jan 17 at the intersection of the former Coal Pile Drive. During this time, construction crews will install a pedestrian crosswalk that was planned as part of the West Campus Steam Plant Project. During construction times, crew members will be on-hand to provide traffic control.
