A Trinity College senior and a MD/MBA candidate have been chosen to deliver welcome remarks at the university-wide commencement ceremony May 12 at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Senior Zahra Hassan will represent undergraduates. An economics major also minoring in art history, Hassan has also demonstrated a commitment to service, tutoring and mentoring low-income students.
A Questbridge Match Scholar, Hassan has been deeply involved in numerous extracurricular activities that have made an impact on both the Duke and Durham communities, underscoring her commitment to making a difference in the community. As one nominator remarked, she "represents the very best of Duke."
The other speaker will be Fuqua School of Business and School of Medicine graduate student Kayla Thompson. With her double degree, she will become a triple Dukie, having previously earned her bachelor’s degree from the university in 2019. Thompson has been an advocate for first-generation and low-income students, contributing to the enhancement of campus life through her leadership in student organizations and her role in helping develop the QuadEx living and learning model.
Thompson was awarded the prestigious Thomas F. Keller Scholarship, an esteemed scholarship at Fuqua, as well as earning the distinction of Fuqua Scholar.
