Duke Flags Lowered: Class of 2020 Greyson Spector Dies
Dear Members of the Duke Community,
I write with great sadness this morning to let you know that we have learned of the unexpected passing earlier today of Greyson Spector, a member of the Class of 2020 in Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.
Grey came to Duke in the Fall of 2016 after graduating from Cary Academy in Cary, North Carolina. The oldest of four brothers, including Cole, Duke ‘22, and Cade, Duke ‘23, Grey was a philosophy major and an economics minor also earning a certificate in philosophy, politics and economics. He was accepted into the Duke Law School Class of 2023; Dean Abrams and the Duke Law School community share our profound sense of loss today.
Part of a close cohort of students involved in the Duke in Chicago program last summer, he was also a brother of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Professor A.J. Janiak, who taught Grey in philosophy last semester, describes Grey as a very engaged student who was humble, attentive, a very good listener, and a pleasure to be around.
We know that Grey’s sudden passing will be felt deeply by the many students, faculty, and staff he met during his time at Duke. Students, wherever you are—for those of you remaining on campus, for those in the Durham community, and for those at home across the U.S. and the world—we encourage you to reach out to one another to find support and connection. Please know that the many university resources listed below are also available to you during this time.
Thank you for joining with me as the Duke family extends support and compassion to Grey’s friends, and our sincerest, most heartfelt condolences to his family.
Sincerely yours,
Mary Pat McMahon
