Said@Duke: Jim Steinberg on U.S.-China Relations

Part of the Said@Duke: 2019-2020 Series

Jim Steinberg, former deputy secrectary of state, joined American Grand Strategy Director Peter Feaver, a Duke professor of political science, in a conversation about the US-China relationship. Steinberg said the United States' position had been that we supported a strong and prosperous China. "The debate within the Obama administration became, ‘Had China changed its position, and was it seeking to become an ascendant power?’”

“I think Xi Jinping changed the game," he added. "There’s no question that he is a more confident leader than his predecessor.”
