Message From President Price About Durham Gas Explosion
Dear Duke Colleagues,
Today has been a frightening and sad day for the city of Durham. Our thoughts are with those who were injured – including eight Duke employees – and the family and friends of our fellow citizen who was killed. We are deeply grateful to our firefighters, police officers and medical professionals for their bravery and skill. I also want to acknowledge the countless Duke employees who worked tirelessly throughout the day to care for the injured and assist in the recovery efforts, and who truly demonstrated our deepest held values at a time of crisis. The collaboration with our partners in the city and county could not have been stronger throughout the day and will continue as Durham recovers.
For those who need support, the Personal Assistance Service is available for faculty and staff, while students should contact Counseling & Psychological Services. Duke Chapel will also be open today until 10:00 p.m. for prayer, meditation and reflection.
Durham’s resilience and compassion are our city’s greatest strengths and will carry us through this difficult time.
Vincent E. Price
President
