Start packing up your paperwork.

The Duke Credit Union will host a shred event from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – or until the truck is full – on April 13 at its office at 2200 W Main St. Each person can shred up to three personal boxes of paper. There is no size limit for the boxes, but they must be light enough for a volunteer to lift and handle. The event is open to individuals only, not businesses.

Duke Credit Union recommends shredding credit card offers, bank and credit card statements, canceled checks, bills, tax returns, medical records and any other personal records that include a social security number or other sensitive data. Identity fraud affected about 16.7 million Americans in 2018, according to research firm Javelin.

“Don't make it easy to become a victim of identity theft,” said Cassandra Taylor, a financial advisor with Duke Credit Union. “Sometimes, we don't find out something has gone wrong until it affects our ability to get credit. Shredding documents prevents your personal information from getting into the wrong hands.”

The credit union has partnered with Shred-it for the event.
