The first class of the Duke Management Academy kicked off a year of professional enrichment with an opening ceremony last week at the Freeman Center for Jewish Life.

The new program from Duke Learning & Organizational Development, a unit within Duke Human Resources, is designed to serve experienced middle managers within all business units – gifted leaders who want to sharpen their leadership skills.

“I think middle managers are the lost voices in most businesses today,” said Joy Birmingham, assistant director of leadership and professional development for Learning & Organization Development. “They’re not the brand-new leader and they’re not the senior executives. So we need to figure out how best to develop them.”

The Duke Management Academy offers a blend of leadership training and lessons in operational areas such as human resources, finances, business strategy and communication. Spanning 12 months, the first half of the program will feature twice monthly classroom sessions, while the second half will consist of team work and self-guided learning.

“What we’re trying to do is infuse these types of skills in people across the enterprise,” Duke Vice President for Administration Kyle Cavanaugh said during his remarks to the class. “My personal hope for you is that you feel that this is a good use of your time, because the most important asset that each of us possess is time.”

The class of 28 scholars, all nominated by supervisors and drawn from the University and Health System, was selected from around 150 nominees.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about how to develop a staff and build a better work culture,” said Mike Wilson, clinical team leader in Duke Respiratory Care Services. “That’s something that we’re always working toward.”

And with this being the first go-around for the program, both the organizers and scholars will learn plenty.

“I think the fact that this is the first one is exciting,” said Hilary Bouton-Verville, director of Research Development for the Duke Human Vaccine Institute. “We are going to develop this into something for future managers and future leaders to use. In the meantime, we’re all developing ourselves into future managers and future leaders as well.”
