Manion Receives Grant From American Political Science Association

Will support conference on studying Chinese politics

Political science professor Melanie Manion has received a $25,000 grant from the American Political Science Association Special Projects Fund.

Manion, the Vor Broker Family Professor of Political Science at Duke, and co-recipient Jean Oi from Stanford University, will use the funds for a multi-institutional conference on “Studying Chinese Politics to Integrate and Contribute to Political Science,” to be held at Stanford this December.

Melanie ManionThe idea for the conference grew out of a 2016 meeting at Duke of a core group of political scientists who study China. The December conference aims to use findings from different short "waves" of research within China studies to promote deeper integration of China politics into the discipline of political science, Manion said.

“The entire discipline will benefit by more explicit thinking about generalizing from China to beyond China,” she said. “The December conference will develop an agenda of key questions and methodologies to be further developed in a series of conferences that will rotate among five universities: Duke, Harvard, Michigan, MIT and Stanford.”
