What to See at Duke This Week -- Softball, Condi Rice & Opioid Policy

What to see at Duke -- Condi Rice, softball and a opioid conference

1 Opioid misuse is straining state and local government resources and sending policymakers looking for help. A conference sponsored by the Sanford School’s Policy Bridge project will aim to get recent academic research and policy recommendations in the hands of government officials. Topics will include support services for children in households with substance abuse, creating treatment networks and providing care systems in underserved and rural communities. Registration information can be found here. 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Penn Pavilion.

3 While the headlines present crisis piled upon crisis, Condoleezza Rice has some thoughts on how to navigate the geopolitical risks. The former U.S. secretary of state and national security adviser, along with co-author Amy Zegart of Stanford University, will discuss their book, “Political Risk: How Businesses and Organizations Can Anticipate Global Insecurity.” Free. 5 p.m. Geneen Auditorium, Fuqua School of Business.

3 Over a quarter-century of scholarship, Duke sociologist Eduardo Bonilla-Silva has refined how scholars define and debate the issue of race. In the annual Trinity Distinguished Lecture, Bonilla-Silva will look back at his career from his early theoretical work on “racialized social systems” to his pathbreaking and widely cited analysis of “Racism Without Racists.” Of course, Bonilla-Silva is not finished with his career.  He’ll also discuss his current study of “racialized emotions.” Free. 3 p.m. Penn Pavilion.

5 A regular visitor to Duke, Emerson String Quartet offers a notable conclusion to the season’s Chamber Arts Series. One of the most celebrated string quartets in America, the group will highlight its concert with one of Beethoven’s most moving and difficult pieces: the Quartet No. 13, op. 130, whose alternate finale replaces its predecessor, the Grosse Fuge, which had proved too challenging for many of Beethoven's contemporaries. Tickets: $48, $42, $20. 8 p.m. Baldwin Auditorium.

6 Members of the Duke softball team have taken to calling themselves “Team One,” an appropriate moniker for these Blue Devils who have embraced making the sport part of the university athletics community during its inaugural year. Starting everything from scratch, the players and coaches handled the season with flair and have achieved a 26-23 record. Their last regular season home game comes against Campbell before they move on to the ACC Tournament in Atlanta. The game is free. 1:30 p.m. Duke Softball Stadium.
