Duke officials are closely monitoring weather conditions as forecasts project winter weather will track across the northern Piedmont of central North Carolina beginning Friday morning.

The National Weather Service has reported a winter storm advisory from 9 a.m. Friday until 4 p.m. Saturday.

Light rain will mix with and change over to wet snow late Friday morning and afternoon. Snow accumulations for Durham are projected to be less than an inch, mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces, with localized higher amounts possible.

During periods of heavier precipitation, some slush or snow may accumulate on bridges and roadways typically shaded from sunshine.

Elevated surfaces on campus will be pre-treatment on Friday, and crews will assesses for potential icy areas that need to be cleared or treated during the day.

Officials expect little impact on operations on campus and do not current expect to activate the Severe Weather and Emergency Conditions policy. However, staff members should review the policy and discuss with their managers what they should do if it is activated.

During times of severe weather, some staff positions require on-site presence to continue operations. To ensure continuous operations of patient care, student support and research functions, managers should assign all jobs to one of three service categories:

  • Essential Service: During severe weather or emergency conditions, essential service staff report or remain at work. Transportation service and childcare services may be provided for those required to work during severe weather or emergency conditions.
  • Reserve Service: During severe weather or emergency conditions, these staff are assigned a status at the time of the event.
  • Delayed Service: During severe weather or emergency conditions, these staff do not report to or remain at work.

Future updates will be posted on Duke Today as conditions warrant.
