Antwan Lofton Named AVP for Staff & Labor Relations, Staff & Family Programs

Denise Evans to retire after 40 years of service

Antwan Lofton has been appointed as the new assistant vice president for Staff & Labor Relations, Staff & Family Programs.  He will begin his role at Duke on June 15, 2017.

Lofton is currently serving as the senior director of Employee Relations & Equal Employment Opportunity at Howard University/Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He joined Howard in 2006 as the director of Equal Employment Opportunity before assuming his current role in 2015. Lofton will be part of the Duke Human Resources management team reporting to Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for Administration.

"Atwan brings a breadth of experience in healthcare and academic settings in both unionized and non-unionized environments," Cavanaugh said. “Throughout his career, he has established himself as a consummate professional capable of dealing with complex employee issues, and we’re excited to have him join us at Duke.”

Lofton earned a master of science in sociology from Morgan State University and a bachelor of arts in psychology from Shaw University in Raleigh. Lofton grew up in Cary, N.C. and said he is looking forward to returning home and starting his role at Duke.

"Duke is one of the top places to work and serve the community,” he said. “Duke is a place that has taken care of me as an infant and my family members through the years," Lofton said. “I’m excited to be a part of an institution that has been such a pillar in the community and holds such a deep commitment to those it serves.”

Lofton will fill the position currently held by Denise Evans, who will retire on June 30 after 40 years of service at Duke.
