Duke to Host Forum on Race and Police Relations March 3

A forum on race and policing will bring together participants from multiple vantage points, including activists, scholars and law enforcement officers, on Friday, March 3, at Duke University.

The “Policing Color -- Black, Brown, and Blue: Provost Forum on Race, Community, and the Pursuit of Justice” runs from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Penn Pavilion on Duke’s West Campus. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at https://bit.ly/2k4XkiS.

Parking is available for a fee in the Bryan Center garage and lot.

The goal of the forum is to better understand the factors that contribute to the escalation of encounters between police and people of color, provide insights on the nature of police and civilian interactions, help to appreciate the impact of these encounters on marginalized communities, particularly when video footage goes “viral,” offer a process for achieving justice between sometimes oppositional groups, and find potential solutions.

The forum schedule is planned as follows:

-- Understanding the Problem (9-10:30 a.m.)

-- Dissecting Police and Civilian Interactions (10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.)

-- Visualizing the Impact of Racial Violence (1:30-3 p.m.)

-- Obtaining Justice and Balancing Power (3:15-4:45 p.m.)

-- Constructing Solutions (5-6:30 p.m.)
