A Look at Fall Campus Colors
Employee photographs capture campus during past autumn months
July and August offered consecutive record-setting heat as the two hottest months recorded, but the cloudy skies and cooler temperatures – even if just the 80s – is a sign of things to come.
Tomorrow, Sept. 22, is the first day of fall, and soon enough, trees and flowers across campus will transition, showcasing a range of colors.
“Watching Duke change over the seasons is something to marvel,” said Shaun King, an avid photographer and multimedia specialist with the Department of Political Science.
To celebrate the arrival of autumn, here is a collection of images captured by staff last fall.
“I loved how vast, warm and inviting the tree looked - almost magical - especially with the tiny ray of sunshine peeking through the leaves. Campus is filled with spectacular looks in all seasons. Sometimes you find it in the tiniest corner or the darkest shadow. Sometimes you have to take a step back to see the big picture. This was one of those big picture times."

“What I absolutely love to do in the forest in the fall is find a quiet place along the creek that is shining with vibrant, contrasting colors - a reflection of the leaves overhead.”
Sara DiBacco Childs
Director, Duke Forest
“I couldn’t believe how well the light and dark areas worked well together. So many shades of colors appeared and complimented each other. The tree got my attention because of how bright its colors were and it offered depth with the water and ducks. Everything fell together.”

“I was walking to a meeting one day, when I saw this gorgeous view. I’m still new enough to Duke where the beauty of the place can make me catch my breath. Just another beautiful day, in one of the prettiest places I know.”
Carol Jackson
Digital communications strategist, Sanford School of Public Policy
“The slate grey and dark tones of the buildings on West Campus create neutral color foundations, allowing the natural foliage to really pop and flourish in contrast. This image highlights that contrast. I waited long enough in the scene to capture the human expression I needed: a singular student, in stride, reaching, opening that iconic Duke door.”

“I was walking down Campus Drive on my way to a morning meeting. The crisp, clear air and the changing colors make this my favorite time of year. On this day, the bright morning sun really seemed to make the oranges and yellows stand out on the trees along Campus Drive, so I used them to frame the chapel against the bright, blue sky.”
