December 2016

Maxison Alvin Parrish, an employee of Duke University Health System Environmental Services Department, died December 28, 2016.  Maxison, well known in the community as “Honey”, due to his naturally sweet nature and positive attitude, began his career with Duke on April 24, 2005.

Vivian Melvin, a former employee with Duke University Health System, working in the Pediatric Support Unit, died December 26, 2016. Vivian began her career with Duke On September 27, 1976 retiring November 01, 1989. Vivian would often share her story about working for the USO at Camp Butner, seeing the young soldiers off to war then welcoming them home. Vivian, at 92 years of age, had total recall of a soldier’s name she had danced the jitterbug with, to celebrate his return from service. Her vivacious zest for life could not be denied, she will be greatly missed.

Donald Melvin Knight, a former Security Office working for the Duke University Health System, died December 03, 2016. Donald began his career with Duke on July 01, 1986 retiring June 01, 1994. After retirement, Donald enjoyed selling and delivering his daughter’s peanut brittle, which he did right up until his death. Many people around town knew Donald only as the “Peanut Brittle Man”, a name he was fondly attached to.

Richard Riggs, an employee working at Duke Raleigh Hospital in the Engineering Department, died December 16, 2016. Richard began working with Duke on July 10, 2000.

William P. Jones, a former employee of Duke North working in the Operating Room, died on December 14, 2016. William began his career with Duke on April 01, 1970 retiring June 01, 1995.

Dennis Walter Novack, an employee with Duke working with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Facilities Management Team serving as the Program Director, died December 12, 2016. Dennis reviewed all construction documents for Duke to ensure they successfully met ADA requirements. Dennis began his career with Duke on July 01, 2002 sharing over fifteen years of life with Duke. 

Regina Price, an employee of Duke University’s Housekeeping Operations working in the Medical Sciences Division, died December 12, 2016.  Regina began working with Duke on July 11, 2005.

Claudius D. Hunter, a former employee with Aramark Dining Services, died December 10, 2016. Claudius’s career began August 31, 1979 retiring on May 01, 2004.

Helen Q. Docher, a former Preparation Services Associate working with Duke Hospital Food and Nutrition, died December 06, 2016. Helen began her career with Duke on March 01, 1970 retiring June 01, 1997.

Tawnya Marie Norris, who worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Office of Interdisciplinary Program Management, died December 05, 2016. Tawnya began her career with Duke October 22, 2012.

Jean Marie Hough, an employee of Duke University Hospital working as a Clinical Registered Nurse at the Cancer Center, died December 03, 2016. Jean Marie began serving Duke on March 12, 2012.

Bonnie D. Taylor, a former employee with the Women’s Auxiliary of Duke Medical Center, died December 03, 2016. Bonnie began her career on August 01, 1979 retiring April 01, 1989.

H. Keith Brodie, M.D., former President Emeritus, died December 02, 2016. Keith Brodie’s term as President of Duke (1985-1993) allowed him to be present during Duke’s rise to national recognition and reputations. As President, Keith celebrated Duke’s first team national championship in men’s soccer 1986, and Duke’s first national championships in men’s basketball in 1991 and 1992.  The initiatives championed by Keith became signature qualities of Duke and remain part of Duke University’s values today, including an emphasis on interdisciplinary scholarship, investments in medical research and a commitment to a diverse and inclusive faculty and student body.

November 2016

Teresa Elliot, a former employee, working in the Duke University Affiliated Physicians Henderson Family Medical Facility, died November 29, 2016. Teresa began her career on January 02, 1984, retiring June 01, 2007. Teresa shared twenty three years with Duke.

Vernon Parker, a former employee working in the Housekeeping Operations Unit of Duke Hospital North, died November 29, 2016. Vernon began working with Duke on January 12, 1984 retiring September 01, 2009 servicing Duke for over twenty five years.

Betty Duke, a former Orthopaedics Clinician, working for Duke Medical Center, died November 24, 2016.  Betty began working July 5, 1972 retiring August 01, 2003 sharing thirty one years of life with Duke.

Johnny Rogers Jr., a former Respiratory Therapist, working for Duke Medical Center, died November 23, 2016.  He began working with Duke on November 01, 1986 retiring June 01, 2011. Johnny loyally served Duke for twenty five years.

Irvie Bullock, a former employee with Duke Medical Center working in the Hematology Department, died November 20, 2016. Irvie served Duke from December 01, 1992 retiring on May 01, 2012.

Terri M. Williams, a G & C Administration Cellular Therapy Administrator, died November 17, 2016.  Terri’s career with Duke began on February 20, 2006.

Rosalind Kincaid, an employee of Duke Regional Hospital working in the Sterile Processing Surgical Technology Department, died November 14, 2016.  Rosalind began working with Duke on November 01, 1981 retiring May 01, 2007.

Derrick T. Bass, an employee working with Duke University as an Out-Patient Pre-Registration Patient Services Representative, died November 10, 2016. Derrick’s career began on August 28, 1989 sharing twenty seven years of life with Duke.

Barbara Parker, a former Duke Raleigh Hospital employee working in the Nursing Administration Department, died November 07, 2016. Barbara’s career began on March 03, 1986 retiring July 01, 2014 serving Duke for twenty eight years.

Douglas Bryce Vinsel, President/CEO of Duke Raleigh Hospital from 2006 until his retirement in December 2012, died on November 07, 2016. In 1974 Douglas received his Master’s Degree from Duke University. Fulfilling a long and accomplished healthcare career. He received numerous accolades during his career, most notably, Douglas was named to the Triangle Business Leader’s Hall of Fame in 2009, and recognized as one of the Triangle’ 100 Most Influential Business Leaders by the Triangle Business Journal in 2012.

Gina Deatrick, an Administrative Director of Duke University’s Health System Heart Center, died November 04, 2016. Gina began her career with Duke on May 29, 2001.

Karen Baumer, a former Registered Nurse/Recruiter at Duke University Medical Center, died November 03, 2016. Karen began working with Duke on June 20, 1988 retiring September 01, 2011.

Linda Connolly, a former employee of the Private Diagnostic Clinic Outreach Program, died on November 03, 2016. Linda began her career on October 02, 1997 retiring January 01, 2004.

Eugene Evans, a former employee working in Duke Pathology Laboratories, died November 03, 2016.  Eugene began working with Duke on October 01, 1971 retiring September 01, 1987.

Betty R. Holmes, a former employee with Facilities Management of Duke University, working in the Housekeeping arena, died November 01, 2016.  Betty began her career on May 01, 1973 retiring shortly thereafter.

Joan Wall, a former employee of DCFM in the Chairman’s Office, died on October 29, 2016. Joan began her career with Duke on August 22, 1996 retiring February 01, 1996.

Bonita Emons, formerly employed as an RN, working in the Emergency Room of Duke North, died on October 25, 2016. Bonita began her career on July 15, 2002 retiring February 01, 2013.

Helen Molina, a former employee with the Cardiology Department at Duke Medical Center, died October 22, 2016. Helen began her career on July 01, 1968 retiring March 01, 1990.

Mary P. Wilson, a former employee of Duke Regional Hospital working in the Operating Room, died October 22, 2016. Mary began her career with Duke on December 07, 2009 retiring July 01, 2013.

Judy Wyatte, a former employee with Duke Health Community Care Billing and Collections, died October 22, 2016. Judy’s career began June 20, 2011 retiring on May 01, 2016.

Robert Thornton Jr., an employee of Duke University’s Housekeeping Operations, died October 15, 2016.  Robert began working with Duke on October 30, 2006. He will be missed by many as he was a friend to all.

Lonnie Turrentine, who worked in Housekeeping Operations at Duke Regional Hospital, died October 07, 2016. Lonnie’s career began at Duke on June 09, 1977 retiring September 01, 2011 serving Duke for over thirty years.

Barbara Newborg, a former Associate Professor of General Internal Medicine, died October 05, 2016. Barbara’s career began with Duke on September 01, 1952 retiring April 13, 1991 serving Duke for nearly forty years.

Beverly Hafer, a former employee, who worked in the Central Staffing Offices of the University, died on September 30, 2016. Beverly began her career with Duke on August 08, 1979 eventually retiring April 01, 2009 after serving thirty years.

Allen Roses, a Professor working with the Neuro Research Community, died on September 30, 2016. Allen worked at Duke University from September 01, 1970 until his passing.

Anne Grayson Klose Doar, a former employee who worked in Duke University Registrar’s Office, died September 27, 2016.  Anne’s career with Duke began February 19, 1992 retiring January 01, 2011.

Jasper Davis, a former employee with Duke University working as a Groundskeeper in the Operations Department, died September 26, 2016. Jasper’s career began on April 01, 1967 retiring July 01, 1988.

She was the recipient of the ‘Village Pride Award’ where she was described as “One of the most lovable and genuinely caring individuals who ever lived. Someone who just loved doing nice things for others, without fanfare or any desire for recognition.”

J. Horst Meyer, a Physics Professor, died August 14, 2016. J. Horst’s career began at Duke in 1959 spanning well over fifty years. His positive presence could be felt all throughout the University. In 2014 he was awarded the ‘Duke University Medal’, the school’s highest honor for distinguished service recognizing him for numerous contributions to campus research, teaching and culture. During his fifty seven years at Duke, J. Horst established himself as one of the world’s lead authorities on experimental condensed matter physics.
