Protagonist of Movie ‘Defiance’ to Speak After Screening
The movie is about the Bielski brothers’ desperate attempt to save thousands of Jews from the Nazis.
The public is invited to watch the 2009 movie "Defiance" -- a true story about the Bielski brothers’ desperate attempt to save thousands of Jews from the Nazis during World War II -- at Duke University on Monday, March 28. After the movie, the youngest of the brothers, Aron Bell, will participate in a discussion with the audience. Bell is the grandfather of Sophie Bell, a Duke first-year student. The movie, which starred Daniel Craig, was based on the brothers’ efforts to hide thousands of people from the Nazis in the dense woods near their home in Eastern Europe in the early 1940s. The event is sponsored by the Coalition for Preserving Memory, a Duke student group that aims to commemorate victims of genocide from the 20th and 21st centuries. Co-sponsors include Jewish Life at Duke, Jewish Studies, and the Student Organization Finance Committee. The event will run from 6-9 p.m. in Room 04 of the Sanford School of Public Policy. Parking is available in the parking garage near the Bryan Center.
