Middlebury College has selected Colleen Fitzpatrick to be its next vice president for advancement, effective July 1. Fitzpatrick currently serves at Duke University as assistant vice president for Trinity College and the Graduate School.

At Middlebury, Fitzpatrick will oversee all fundraising and alumni-relations activities, including for the undergraduate College, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, the Middlebury Language Schools, Bread Loaf School of English, Bread Loaf Writers Conferences, the Middlebury C.V. Starr Schools Abroad, and the Middlebury School of the Environment.

“It has been a privilege working with Colleen since I arrived at Duke in May,” said Valerie Ashby, Dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. “She has been key to my transition by introducing me to alumni and friends of the university across the country. She has been critical in the success of Trinity in the capital campaign and in the organization of the Trinity Board of Visitors. Personally, it has been a pleasure working with her, and I will sincerely miss her on the Trinity leadership team.”

Fitzpatrick has had a deep impact on the college, having coordinated and led fundraising for Trinity through three development campaigns. During the Campaign for Duke (1996-2003), Fitzpatrick and her colleagues raised $418 million in gifts and pledges. During the Financial Aid Initiative (2005-2008), her team raised $195.9 million for Trinity College need-based scholarships and $10.4 million for graduate fellowships. And in our current campaign, Duke forward, she and major gifts officers have already raised $425.5 million towards our overall goal of $435 million, with almost 18 months left in the campaign.

During her time supporting Trinity, she worked with five deans of the college. She also coordinated four leadership volunteer boards, including the Trinity College Board of Visitors, the Graduate School Board of Visitors, the DukeEngage National Advisory Board, and the Duke Financial Economics Steering Committee.

“Colleen has been an exceptional fundraiser and leader at Duke over the past 17 years, helping to drive Trinity College of Arts and Sciences to new heights in several successful campaigns,” said Stephen Bayer, associate vice president, university development at Duke. “Laurie Patton is fortunate to team up with Colleen again to further Middlebury’s historic accomplishments in development and alumni affairs.”

Trinity College Dean Valerie Ashby is working with the University Development on Fitzpatrick’s replacement.
