Traffic Light Being Installed at Erwin Road/Emergency Drive

Crosswalk also under construction to enhance pedestrian safety

A new traffic light and pedestrian crosswalk are being installed at the intersection of Erwin Road and Emergency Drive. The crosswalk and traffic light will help pedestrians cross Erwin Road when coming or going to and from areas north of the Health System campus, including parking garages and Elba Street.  “This new stoplight and crosswalk will provide a safer means of crossing a very busy Erwin Road and is an important step in the transformation of our campus — a transformation we believe will demonstrate our commitment to safety and enhance the Duke experience for our patients, visitors and staff,” said Ken Powell, vice president of Facilities and Support Services for Duke Hospital.During construction of the crosswalk and according to North Carolina Department of Transportation regulations, one lane of traffic on Erwin Road will be closed daily through the end of August. To limit inconvenience during peak rush hour, the lane closure begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.  Signs will be posted at the sidewalks during construction to help guide patients, visitors and staff safely around the construction area. Police officers will also be present, as required, to help minimize disruptions to traffic flow. The crosswalk will ultimately become part of the Health Campus Greenway, which will connect main campus to the North Pavilion.
