Duke employees can purchase discount tickets to see a GRAMMY-nominated vocal quartet, Mexican-American singer, jazz ensemble and more during the remainder of the Duke Performances season.Through Jan. 5, Duke Performances is offering employees a 25 percent discount per ticket to any show in the 2014-15 schedule. “We are always seeking out ways to connect with the 35,000 employees who work at Duke,” said Aaron Greenwald, Duke Performances’ executive director. “Duke Performances brings world-class performing artists to campus, and our program spans genres, to include theater, music and dance.”Upcoming shows through May 2015 include the GRAMMY-nominated vocal quartet New York Polyphony, which will present “Sing Thee Nowell,” a holiday program that will explore nine centuries of music, in Baldwin Auditorium on Dec. 12. Also, Branford Marsalis, the GRAMMY-winning saxophonist, composer and bandleader, will play with his quartet in Baldwin on Jan. 30 and 31, 2015.“He is one of the giants of great living jazz musicians and probably the greatest living jazz saxophonist,” Greenwald said. “The opportunity to see him and his ensemble is really rare and fantastic.”Noah Pickus, director of the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke, and his family have used the regular 15-percent employee discount to attend Duke performances over the years. He said his children love to sing, and both children view some of these visiting groups as rock stars, such as vocal sextet The King’s Singers and the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who sing spirituals.“These are intimate performances with world-class artists of all types,” Pickus said. “We have a better everyday lineup of performances here than if we lived in New York City, and they're all much, much cheaper to see.”To receive the special discount, Duke employees may purchase tickets through the Duke University Box Office online, by phone (919-684-4444), or in person. No promotional code is necessary; The employee just needs to show his or her valid DukeCard ID when picking up tickets.
