Religious Leaders to Discuss 'Catastrophe' at March 31 Event

Duke Chapel Dean Luke Powery discusses responses to disaster with Rabbi Raachel Jurovics

A discussion that explores experiences of catastrophe, and responses to it, in both African-American and Jewish histories will occur March 31 at Duke University.

The conversation between the Rev. Luke Powery, dean of Duke Chapel, and Rabbi Raachel Jurovics of Yavneh, a Jewish renewal community in Raleigh, will be moderated by WUNC Radio's Frank Stasio.

The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Duke Divinity School's Goodson Chapel and is free and open to the public.

"Regardless of ethnic and religious traditions, for those facing death-dealing devastations, this conversation can be a reminder that death and trauma do not have the last word in life," Powery said. "Hope still rises out of the ashes of our human existence."

The discussion is being organized by Duke Chapel.
