David Smithwick, currently the chief human resources officer for Duke Clinical Research Institute and Duke Translational Medicine Institute, has been appointed to the role as assistant vice president for Rewards and Recognition in Duke Human Resources.

He will succeed Len Johnson, who has served as the head of Duke's compensation and classification function for more than six years. Johnson plans to retire at the end of the year.

"Len has been a wonderful colleague and exemplary HR professional," said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for Administration. "He has worked closely with many at Duke during his tenure here. His experience, insight and leadership will be greatly missed."

Smithwick will begin his new role on Nov. 4, 2013, and will continue to provide some ongoing support for the DCRI/DTMI during the transition.

Smithwick earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from Lynchburg College and his master's degree in industrial psychology from Long Island University.

"David will bring to the role a vast array of Human Resources experience, including senior positions at prominent institutions such as Diamond Healthcare Corporation, UBS Financial Services, and Magellan Health Services," Cavanaugh said. "We are fortunate to have talented and experienced colleagues such as David to fill this important leadership role in Duke Human Resources."
