Ingrid Daubechies, James B. Duke Professor of Mathematics and professor of electrical and computer engineering, shows off part of an orb structure she and dozens of other Duke faculty, staff and students built Oct. 20 in a study of art and geometry.
The four hanging orbs are hanging in the FCIEMAS atrium and were based on the design of George Hart, a New York-based mathematical sculptor and computer science professor. The public is invited to visit the exhibit in the atrium.
Daubechies arranged for Hart's visit and the exhibit. The orbs are four to seven feet in diameter and include more than 400 pounds of laser-cut aluminum.
