Duke University Hospital officially opened Thursday the new Duke Medicine Pavilion, a major expansion of Duke University Hospital addressing patient needs and the increasing demand for Duke medical services and priority programs.

Pictured, Monte Brown, center, vice president for administration for Duke University Health System, gives a tour of the Duke Medicine Pavilion to Chancellor Dr. Victor Dzau, right, and board members in one of the new operating rooms.

The 8-floor, 608,000 sq.ft. pavilion includes 160 critical care rooms, 18 operating rooms and an imaging suite.  The building's environmentally friendly design earned it a LEED silver certification.

During Thursday's opening Duke Medicine faculty, staff and volunteers were invited to tour the facility.  A community open house and health fair will be held from 111 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 15.
