Duke Launches Mandatory Harassment Prevention Training

New training to be provided through online Learning Management System

Beginning in this month, all Duke faculty and staff will be required to participate in new training aimed at recognizing and preventing harassment.

The harassment policy training, which should take less than 10 minutes to complete, will be provided online and must be completed every two years as part of Duke's commitment to an inclusive and respectful community, as well as compliance with federal regulations. The training will cover Duke's policy on harassment, including examples of prohibited conduct. It will also provide information about resources for those with concerns about possible harassment.

There will be separate offerings -- one for managers and one for staff -- that will be assigned to individuals in the Learning Management System based on their role at Duke.

"Duke is committed to engaging every employee in maintaining a respectful, inclusive working and learning environment," said Benjamin Reese Jr., vice president for the Office for Institutional Equity. "We want people to think about their own behavior, understand that it is not okay to be a silent bystander if they see harassment and to know the resources available to them when they encounter harassment."

Faculty and staff can access the training on Feb. 7 through Duke's online Learning Management System on the Duke@Work self-service website. To get to the system, log on to Duke@Work, select "MyInfo" and then the "MyCareer" tab. In "MyCareer," select "MyLearning" to access the Learning Management System. The harassment policy training should appear under "In Progress Learning Activities" in the Learning Management System.

The training consists of a six-minute narrated PowerPoint presentation with a quiz, which must be completed successfully to confirm understanding of core concepts. The Learning Management System automatically updates training records.

"Having this training online will make completing it more convenient for faculty and staff and provide Duke with a centralized way of tracking this mandatory requirement," Reese said.
