WageWorks card can now be used for over-the-counter drugs
New guidelines allow employees and their dependents buy over-the-countr drugs with a valid prescription at time of purchase

The Internal Revenue Service recently released new guidelines that will allow employees and their dependents with a Health Care Reimbursement Account to use their WageWorks Health Care Card to purchase over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and medicines if a valid prescription is presented at the time of purchase. To use the WageWorks card for over-the-counter medicines, reimbursement account participants will need to present the prescription along with the medicine to a pharmacist. The pharmacist will then dispense and process the purchase. The health care card system will not accept a charge for an over-the-counter medicine or drug unless a prescription number has been assigned. If the pharmacy has an inventory approval system (IIAS), then the purchase is classified as a prescription and no further action is required. If a purchase is made at a non-IIAS pharmacy, then employees will need to submit to WageWorks either the receipt listing a prescription number or the prescription along with a receipt detailing the purchase to avoid having their card suspended."Employees should always keep a copy of their prescription since it will be required each time they use their WageWorks card to purchase over-the-counter medicines or to file a claim for reimbursement of an over-the-counter item," said Saundra Daniels, voluntary benefits plan manager for Human Resources.Employees who have questions about this change or the process for reimbursement, should call WageWorks Customer Service at 1-877-924-3967.
