Duke Farmers Market Opens Ninth Season

The smell of strawberries and a variety of flowers and greens marked the opening day of the Duke Farmers Market Friday.

In addition to the usual selection of locally grown food, visitors could hear experts talk about vermiculture with worms, square foot gardening for small spaces, composting, recycling, water conservation, herb gardens, sustainability, carpools and vanpools and other timely topics.

It's the ninth season for the market. It's open every Friday until July 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Medical Center Bookstore between Duke Hospital and Duke Clinic. (From Aug. 14-Sept. 25, the market will open every other Friday.)

There's also a second way for Duke employees to get local food. The Mobile Farmers Market allows people to pre-purchase fruits and vegetables from local farmers. For more information about the mobile market, click here.
