'Kay' Callaway, former nursing faculty member, dies

Catharine ("Kay") Dater VanBlarcom Callaway, a former faculty member at the School of Nursing, died Feb. 23 at the Forest at Duke. She was born July 6, 1914, in Paterson New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Dr. J. Lamar Callaway.

She is survived by one son, Frederick Lucian Callaway, (Doris Morgan Callaway), and two daughters, Catharine Callaway Stirewalt (Martin Stirewalt) and Elizabeth Ward Callaway, all of Hillsborough, North Carolina. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Stephanie Morgan Callaway of Washington D.C.

Callaway was a registered nurse who trained at the University of Virginia and subsequently came to work at Duke University Hospital. Kay also taught nursing in the Duke University School of Nursing.

She was a active member of First Presbyterian Church in Durham, serving in many capacities, including as President of the Women of the Church. She received the Honorary Life Membership from Presbyterian Women in 1977. She was a member of the Duke University Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, the Junior League of Durham, and the Hope Valley Country Club.

There will be a Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 21, at 11 a.m., followed by a Reception in Watts-Hill Hall.
