How Well Do You Know Duke's Buildings?

We have a winner in this Duke Today contest, but apparently we made the test fairly difficult. Fifteen people entered, but nobody got all five questions correct.

The winner is Scottie Dowdy of the Duke Credit Union. Dowdy was one of seven people who got only one answer wrong. Dowdy's name was selected by lot out of the seven finalists.

There were some curveballs. The question that tripped up most people was the last -- which has the greatest gross area between Cameron and Wallace Wade. Most people went for Wallace Wade, but using the Duke Facility Planning data presented to the Board of Trustees, Duke lists Wade as being 139,000sq. feet. Its neighbor, Cameron, may be enclosed, but it contains 147,255 sq. ft.

Below are answers to the questions:

1. Which is the larger of the two buildings? a) Freeman Center b) John Hope Franklin Center

Many people picked the Freeman Center for this one, but the Franklin Center has it well over the Freeman Center in size. Franklin's gross area is 33,184 sq. ft. while the Freeman Center is just over 18,000 sq. ft.

2. Approximately how many times bigger is total room area the Perkins Library (including Bostock) than Lilly Library? a) 5 b) 15

Most got this. The Bostock addition significantly increased the Perkins facility. It's total room area is 428,516 sq. ft, 15 times the size of Lilly's 27,615 sq. ft.

3. Which building's total room area is closest to that of the Nasher Museum? a) Gilbert-Addoms dormitory on East Campus b) Bryan Student Center

Another question most people got correct. The Nasher's total room area is 66,950 sq. ft., much closer to Gilbert-Addoms' 53,576 sq. ft. than to the Bryan Center's, 164,000 sq. ft. of room area.

4. Which of these buildings has the smaller total room area? a) Duke Chapel b) Biddle Music Building

Another one that several people missed, perhaps because of the Chapel's soaring tower gives the impression of size. But the Chapel's total room area is 37,091 sq ft. (It's gross area is 91,589 sq ft.). That makes it smaller than Biddle's 43,462 sq. ft. of room space.

5. Which stadium has the largest gross area? a) Cameron Indoor Stadium b) Wallace Wade Stadium
