Air Force Historical Foundation Honors I.B. Holley

Duke faculty member served as mentors to generations of military historians

Professor I.B. Holley holds the Air Force Historical Foundation award named in his honor.

Duke History Professor Emeritus I.B. Holley holds an award named after him presented by the Air Force Historical Foundation on Tuesday in the Trinity Room on West Campus. The foundation established the Major General I.B. Holley Award this year to honor individuals who have made "a sustained, significant contribution to the documentation of Air Force history during a lifetime of service." The inaugural award went to Holley for his "decades of assistance, support and encouragement to military historians."

Holley, a Maj. Gen. (retired) in the Air Force, is one of the foremost American military historians. His work has covered topics as varied as the American intellectual history, the history of the highway system and air weapons development.

For decades he has been one of the most popular teachers in Duke's history department. In 1989, he won the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award. He has taught at Duke for nearly 60 years and is still an important part of the department.
