Duke Student Found Dead Tuesday

The following email was sent Tuesday afternoon by Larry Moneta, Duke University's vice president for student affairs, to the Duke student community regarding the death of junior Chris Sanders

It is with profound sadness that I write to share news about the death of a member of our Duke University student community.

Chris Sanders, 20, a junior art history/visuals arts major and student-athlete from New Haven, Connecticut, was found dead early this morning in his room in Kilgo Quad. Police are investigating the cause of death, but initial indications suggest that no foul play was involved.

Chris was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, the First-Year Advisory Council board and an accomplished diver on the Duke Swim Team. Chris graduated from Notre Dame High School in 2004 where he was named All-State and Academic All-America his senior year. He also received National Merit Commendation and Notre Dame Latin Medal and was a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society and School Newspaper.

Grief counselors and residence life staff will be available throughout the day and evening. A counselor from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will be available for students from 6-8 p.m. this evening in Kilgo's O Commons Room. CAPS will welcome drop-ins beginning tomorrow morning from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. continuing throughout the week. For students looking for contacts in their respective faith communities, please contact Director of Religious Life Craig Kocher at (919) 812-4812 or craig.kocher@duke.edu.

More information will be posted at the Division of Student Affairs web site (studentaffairs.duke.edu) as it becomes available. We have been in touch with Chris' family and extend our deepest sympathies to them and Chris' friends.
