South African Human Rights Activist to Speak April 5

Zackie Achmat will discuss the global response to HIV/AIDS from an activist's perspective

Leading South African human rights and HIV/AIDS activist Zackie Achmat will deliver the Karl von der Heyden Distinguished International Lecture at Duke University on Wednesday, April 5.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 5 p.m. in the Student Amphitheater at the university's MedicalCenter, adjacent to the food court on the lower level of Duke South. Parking is available in the MedicalCenter parking garage on Trent Drive.

Achmat will discuss the global response to HIV/AIDS from an activist's perspective. Achmat is chair of the Treatment Action Campaign, which was founded in 1998 to fight for greater access to HIV treatment for South Africans by raising public awareness about HIV.

Achmat has won numerous awards for his work, including being named by Time magazine's European edition as one of the heroes of 2003 and receiving the 2001 Desmond Tutu Leadership Award.
