LGBT Center Director to Discuss Provincetown

Karen Christel Krahulik's first book traces the history of the gay resort

Karen Christel Krahulik, director of Duke's Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life, will discuss her first book, Provincetown: From Pilgrim Landing to Gay Resort at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at The Regulator on Ninth Street.

The book traces the history of Provincetown, Mass., from a whaling seaport to a gay and lesbian tourist destination. Krahulik also looks at the way different groups “ including Portuguese fishermen and women, artists and tourists “ have shaped this community and have navigated various economic, racial and cultural disputes.

Provincetown was published in May by New York University Press.

Krahulik said her aim in telling Provincetown's story is to illustrate how effective community building requires leaders and residents to consider all forms of difference “ sexuality, ethnicity, race, gender “ rather than just one.

Krahulik will leave her Duke post at the end of September to become an associate dean of the college at Brown University.
