Physicist and Popular Author Brian Greene to Speak at Duke Feb. 17

In his new book, Greene considers such concepts as space time and the "big bang" theorized to have begun the universe

DURHAM, N.C. -- Brian Greene, a Columbia University physics and mathematics professor whose previous book, "The Elegant Universe," helped laymen understand the concepts of string theory, will discuss his new book Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Duke University.

Greene's 7 p.m. talk in Love Auditorium at the Levine Science Research Center on Duke's West Campus is co-sponsored by The Regulator Bookshop in Durham and Duke's Department of Physics. A question-and-answer session will follow his address, which is free and open to the public.

According to the book's publisher, Random House, Greene's new book, "The Fabric of the Cosmos," offers "a grand tour of the universe that makes us look at reality in a completely different way." It considers such concepts as space time, the "big bang" theorized to have begun the universe and progress toward constructing a theory that can explain everything from subatomic particles to black holes.
